The use of rubrics as a scoring tool in the overall program assessment process is quite common and advantageous when used correctly. Mastering the art of rubric construction and implementation is key to enhancing program assessment processes and fostering continuous improvement in student learning and program effectiveness. 

This course provides guidance on how to create effective rubrics for program assessment. It includes information on how to construct rubrics, different types of rubrics that can be utilized, considerations for choosing a specific type of rubric, the importance of evaluating a rubric and how to use the results of rubric scoring to promote continuous improvement of student learning and program effectiveness.

Understand Rubrics

  • Identify key characteristics.
  • Differentiate among the uses by faculty, students, and programs.
  • Recognize distinctions among assessment OF, FOR and AS learning.

Rubric Construction

  • Define the terms used.
  • Critique the dimensions and descriptors used.
  • Select appropriate scoring scales.
  • Explore various types

Evaluate Rubrics

  • Describe the focus.
  • Summarize criteria for evaluating effectiveness.
  • Review for fairness and sensibility.
  • Apply calibration processes for validation.
  • Explain the integration of program-level rubrics into individual courses.

Implement Rubrics in Courses

  • Modify rubrics to meet faculty scoring needs while maintaining assessment integrity.
  • Explain how rubrics can serve as learning tools for students.

Course Details

This credentialing course is self-paced and allows registration at any time. Gain immediate access upon registration and start learning on your own schedule.

Expect to spend about 5 hours completing the course. Access is provided for six months from the registration date. You must complete all course work and quizzes with a passing grade to earn a digital badge upon course completion. Course introductory quiz requires a 90% or higher, the module quizzes require a 70% or higher and the summative assessment requires an 80% or higher.

This is the third of four courses to complete to earn your Program Assessment Design and Develop digital certificate.

This course takes place online, via D2L, ABET’s learning management system. An internet connection is required to access and complete the course work.
