Leading Faculty in Program Assessment
Program Assessment Data and Decision Making
Course 8
Leading Faculty in Program Assessment is an engaging, practical, and research-informed online course designed for academic leaders, assessment coordinators, and faculty who are tasked with leading or improving student outcomes assessment within their programs. The course addresses one of the most persistent challenges in higher education: effectively involving faculty in program assessment in a meaningful, sustainable, and student-centered way.
Explore the underlying reasons for faculty resistance and learn five core principles to overcome these challenges: starting with the end in mind, understanding motivation, effective communication, empathic leadership, and embracing incrementalism. Participants will learn to develop a vision for assessment that aligns with institutional culture, communicate that vision clearly across multi-generational faculty, and apply motivational models—such as the MUSIC model and Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations theory—to foster faculty engagement.
Through real-world examples, interactive reflection exercises, and structured planning activities, learners will develop the skills and strategies needed to lead change and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement. Emphasis is placed on building faculty ownership of the assessment process, simplifying practices to avoid burnout and reinforcing collaboration and shared success.
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with a personalized action plan and a set of proven strategies to help shift faculty mindsets and embed assessment into the fabric of academic life.
